Split Tasks

The Schedule schedules Tasks on the day that they are either to be completed or to be started, depending on the setting in Setting Schedule Dates.

For example imagine Job Number 123 with a Required By date of Friday, and that you have the setting in Setting Schedule Dates set as Finish.

And that Job 123 has one Process called Assemble with a budget of 24 hours.

And your Schedule requires Assemble Tasks to be completed one day before the Required By date (for more information on setting up Schedules - see
Add New Schedule).

Thus you would expect that Assemble Task to be scheduled for Thursday - see below as an example

But imagine if you only had one Assembler - ie have a
Scheduling Capacity of 8 hours per day.

Clearly one Assembler starting the Task on Thursday (with a budget of 24 hours) will be too late - he really needs to start it on Tuesday.

In this case the Schedule should show the task over three days - ie show 8 hours on Tuesday (when it needs to be started), 8 on Wednesday and 8 on Thursday.

To do this Empower needs the Task to be split.

To split a Task,  from the View > Schedule page click on the Task to be split.

A pop up message similar to the following will display

Click on Split Task (highlighted above).  You should see something similar to

Enter the number of days to split the job across - in this case we will enter 3 days.   After clicking on the Split button you should see something similar to

Note that the budget will be also split across the number of days and also that the Tasks are locked (see highlighted above) - for more information on locked Tasks see Locking Tasks.

Note that this is also visible in the Job > View > View Job page.  If a Task is split clicking on Split Date (see highlighted below) will display the dates the Task is split across.

A few additional points to note

1.  If the setting in Setting Schedule Dates is set to Start, then the Task will be split on the 4th, 5th and 6th, rather than the 2nd, 3rd and 4th

2.   With a Task that is yet to be started, each day will have an equal amount of the Budget, in the example above each day would have 8 hours

3.  The capacity chart will also reflect this - see below

4.  In the Capacity Chart, if the Task has had say 4 hours Actual time spent on it, then it will split it with 4 Hours on the first day, and 8 on the second and third days (see below).

5.  Each Split Task can be moved in the the Schedule in same way that a regular (non split) Task can be moved - see Moving Scheduled Tasks

6.  Once a Task has been Split, a split Task cant be re Split it needs to be Un Split (or joined back up) and then Split again

7.  To Un split (or join backup) the Split Tasks click on one of the split Tasks you should see a message similar to

Click on the Un Split Task button (highlighted above) to Un Split (or join up) the Split Tasks back into one Task.

8.  The weekends setting (i.e. whether weekends are visible or nor are set in the Tools > Settings page - for more information see
Hide Weekends.
